Integral Support for Persons with Disabilities in the West Bank

Caritas Jerusalem, in collaboration with Caritas Poland, has undertaken an intervention co-financed within the framework of the Polish development cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. The primary objective is to enhance the quality of services available to Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in the rehabilitation centers throughout the West Bank, with a particular focus on rural areas.

The initiative involves the establishment of specialized and efficient therapy facilities within these centers, encompassing physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sensory rooms, special education, speech therapy, and vocational training rooms. The aim is to elevate the level of support offered to PWD and enhance the capabilities of caregivers in catering to their needs effectively.

Furthermore, the project seeks to raise community awareness regarding the rights and roles of PWD, emphasizing the importance of their integration into society within an environment that fosters diversity and acceptance.

As a result of the project, PWD are empowered to enter the labor market and achieve independence, thereby supporting themselves and their families. Twenty individuals with disabilities received training in microproject management and were assisted in launching their own small income-generating ventures. Additionally, twenty PWD secured employment in various local institutions, fostering their sense of belonging and self-assurance while contributing to societal integration.

Moreover, over 300 PWD were provided with assistive devices to overcome barriers hindering their participation in daily activities and social inclusion.

A short documentary titled "Ana Mitlak" showcases the achievements of this intervention, featuring testimonies from PWD and their families, as well as improvements observed in the rehabilitation centers. Well-known singer Lina Sliebi collaborated in spreading the message of community acceptance and inclusion, highlighting the success and potential of persons with disabilities as valuable contributors to society when afforded opportunities.
